Construction of a Federal Motorway, Germany

The intended project involved several intersections and an access point.

In April 1991 the Federal Government made a decision upon 17 major national traffic projects called “Verkehrsprojekte Deutsche Einheit” -“German unity”. Among the 7 trunk-road projects included in the program the construction of the new A20 Federal Motorway is of enormous importance for the Federal states Mecklenburg / Western Pomerania and Brandenburg. INROS LACKNER SE designed the entire project for a section of the new motorway between the access points Sanitz and Tessin and was awarded the elaboration of the draft and building-permit design. The intended project involved several intersections and an access point. At the same time highly sensitive landscape areas are crossed, such as the lowlying lowlying area on the banks of the Recknitz river. Planning involved not only road design but also design surveying, soil investigation and altering the position of the existing drain facilities and outfalls.

The optimum route was chosen by employing landscape designers and taking different investigations, such as environmental impact analysis, routing, regional planning procedure, into consideration. In the course of route mapping several meetings and negotiations took place directly on the site in close co-operation with public authorities. They form the basis for the design to be elaborated in accordance with the official road design guideline. The appropriate design is complemented by a subsoil investigation report containing information about the route and the rain retention basins. After designing the drainage of the motorway section envisaging dewatering via rain retention basins and outfalls the existing drains and pipelines have to be restructured or newly planned.
