GFA: 50.000 sqm
The Austrian ÖBB state owned railway and transportation corporation is planning to build its new premises at the new Viennese southern railway station. An 88 m high subtle and elegant volume is contrasting the flat and massive volume of the opposite main station and forms the final point of the urban development of the southern part of the railway station. The spatial requirements of the ÖBB corporation are organized in a flexible 1.35 m grid from the 2nd level to the 35th level. Every three floors a cockpit like opening as a modern communication zone for the employees are creating beautiful vistas.
The podium with its mixed functions such as police station, spa area and cafeteria are connected by a 6-story high atrium creating a amply space fur the public. For the facade design we have been inspired by the complicated and sophisticated rail track system which is a part of every large-scale train station in Europe. Dynamic metal ribbons connected in different angles with each other are wrapped horizontally around the building. These elevation tracks are designed as solar panels. 3 layered frameless glazing runs in between.
