In 1998, under the title “NATURA 2000”, the European Union established an international network of conservation areas, with the main objective of maintaining and protecting biological diversity. “Special areas of conservation” (SAC) were established under the Habitats Directive, and “special protection areas” (SPA) under the Birds Directive. For each area, a binding nature conservation management procedure is to be created for the responsible authorities – the so-called “management plan”.
The flora-fauna-habitat (FFH) area “Altwarper Binnendünen, Neuwarper See und Riether Werder” covers an area of 1,428 hectares, extending as far as the Polish border at Neuwarp Lake. It includes dry woods and inland dunes as well as wet grasslands, extensive reed beds and the open water of Neuwarp Lake. This mosaic of contrasting habitats gives the area great significance from a conservation point of view, not least as a resting area for migratory birds.
