Official opening
Hadeln Canal Lock, newly constructed to replace existing structure

Construction of the original Hadeln Canal Lock in Otterndorf, to control the drainage of the coastal marshland, was completed in 1854. After more than 160 years of service, it became necessary to replace the lock - an important element of the region’s main flood defence line - with a new structure that will adequately protect the area against future storm surges. The demanding project to construct the new structure was executed in seven phases. BIM-capable software was used to facilitate this work, with 3D modelling of key elements such as the existing structure, the new lock with its wing walls, and the required excavation.

On behalf of the client, Lower Saxony’s water management authority, Inros Lackner had responsibility for the feasibility study, project and structural design, coordination of safety and health protection measures, and monitoring the fabrication of the steel structures.

The new lock was officially opened at the beginning of July 2022.
