New ferry terminal for Tortola in the Virgin Islands
Tortola, the largest of the British Virgin Islands, is a popular destination for cruise lines, private yacht owners and tourists. The West End Ferry Terminal is very important, from a tourism and an economic perspective, for its connections between the British and American Virgin Islands. About 40 percent of all arrivals to the British Virgin Islands were handled by the terminal prior to its destruction by Hurricanes Maria and Irma in 2017. In 2019 the quay and the terminal building were provisionally rehabilitated and reopened. However, the current terminal no longer meets today’s requirements. Modernisation and expansion were already necessary, even before the damage was caused. Andrew Fahie, Prime Minister of the British Virgin Islands, announced in August 2021 that planning for the ferry terminal had begun. Inros Lackner is responsible for the planning and design work, and also for construction supervision. The new facility is expected to be completed in 2023.
