The railway mega-hub facility in Lehrte, close to Hanover, is a unique project in Germany. It is to be constructed at the intersection of the north-south and east-west freight-traffic routes. The new mega hub will optimise cargo handling and exchange, enabling more cargo to be transported by rail. The costly, time-consuming shunting of freight cars that is still necessary today will then no longer be required.
