The condition of the Port of Hamburg’s roads and the predicted increase in traffic necessitated a comprehensive renovation and upgrading of the traffic infrastructure. On behalf of the Hamburg Port Authority, Inros Lackner was responsible for the planning and design work for a number of these roads. A particular challenge related to the requirement to continue facilitating heavy port traffic throughout the construction period. The roadway was completely renewed over a length of approximately 2000 linear metres of road, in corridors of width 10 to 20 m.
With its approach to sustainable design, the project has been setting new standards for modern road construction. The materials used contain a high proportion of recycled material, and the application of foamed bitumen results in the release of less CO2 and less pollutants. The use of ClAir ® asphalt, which permanently binds nitrogen, reduces air pollution and also helps to reduce noise. As a further innovation, the use of modern sensor technology in the asphalt facilitates predictive maintenance. The preparation work, awarding of contracts and implementation of the construction project was carried out as an ECI (Early Contractor Involvement) pilot project in cooperation with the Hamburg division of STRABAG AG.
