Topping-out ceremony, Freie Universität Berlin
Milestone for new research building

Just eight months after the foundation stone was laid, the shell of the Berlin university’s innovative new SupraFAB (Supramolecular Functional Architectures at Biointerfaces) research building was completed. The topping-out ceremony was held on 16th May 2019 with invited guests, planners and craftspeople. Those present included the state government building director, Regula Lüscher, the state secretary for science and research, Steffen Krach, and the president of Freie Universität Berlin, Prof. Dr. Günter M. Ziegler. The Inros Lackner team, as part of a joint venture, is responsible for structural design and technical building systems.

"Today's topping-out ceremony marks another important milestone on the way to completing this technically highly sophisticated construction project. By 2020, the building will be handed over to the researchers of Freie Universität. I wish the project accident-free success, and I am delighted that it will soon help make Berlin an even more attractive place for cutting-edge research", said the state government building director during the ceremony.

The new research building takes the form of a compact three-storey block with a reduced-area storey for building technology on top. It will house highly specialised research laboratories, low-vibration and air-conditioned measuring rooms with an extremely sophisticated technical environment, and office, meeting and recreation rooms. The opening is planned for 2020.
