The existing 7-span reinforced concrete bridge (sum of spans: 56 m) in Spremberg, eastern Germany, had to be completely closed due to structural damage. The structure, which was built in the 1950s, also forms a bottleneck on the River Spree during flooding, reducing floodwater discharge. Inros Lackner was commissioned by the town of Spremberg to plan the construction of a replacement structure, including its structural design. The planning and design of the new pedestrian and cycle bridge was carried out with special attention to flood protection and nature conservation. The aluminium truss structure has been designed with two simply supported spans of 36.7 m and 20.6 m - a ratio of 1 to 1.8 as defined by the flood protection requirements. The work has now started, and the new Spree Bridge is expected to be completely constructed by the end of 2021.
