Salvador Allende Bridge in Berlin
Completion of construction of three-span replacement structure

The new Salvador Allende Bridge opened to traffic in November 2022. The bridge crosses a busy four-lane city street while also serving as a key connection over the Müggelspree river in south-east Berlin. The old 136m-long prestressed concrete structure was built in 1981 and had to be replaced due to increasing crack formation. The project was funded under Germany’s Joint Agreement for the Improvement of Regional Economic Structures (GRW).

The three-span replacement structure was designed as a twin-superstructure steel bridge with box girders and an orthotropic steel deck. The existing usage and sharing of the street space was retained, including footpaths and cycle lanes on both sides, and additional turning lanes were integrated in the junction areas. On behalf of Berlin’s Senate Department for the Environment, Urban Mobility, Consumer Protection and Climate Action, Inros Lackner was responsible for the design of the bridge and associated planning work including the required traffic engineering and the coordination of safety and health protection measures.
