This eye-catching steel bridge is a symbol of Heilbronn’s efforts to reduce automobile traffic. It will soon connect the new, relatively car-free “Neckarbogen” part of the city, on the former BUGA premises, with the central area in which the main train station is located. The bridge will be 190 m long, 4.5 m wide and up to 26 m high, and will pass over the Deutsche Bahn railway tracks that serve the train station. The construction is being carried out in six phases, and requires detailed construction planning, tailored to suit railway operations. Inros Lackner is responsible for construction management planning and is providing engineering consulting and construction supervision services for this strongly railway-influenced Project.
In April 2021, the two largest of the jagged arches that have inspired the name "Lightning Bridge" were lifted into position. With lengths of 21 m and 34 m at either side of the bend, each of these arches weighs 31 t and was installed using a 700 t mobile crane supported by two smaller cranes. The bridge is expected to be opened to cyclists and pedestrians at the end of this year.
