The extraordinary flooding that devastated so much of eastern Germany in 2013 caused extensive damage to the “North” tram depot of the Magdeburg Transport Authority (Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe). A new depot is now being constructed, at an elevated level – with the ground surface raised approximately two metres – in order to avoid damage in any future flooding. At the same time, the technical functionality of the depot is being significantly expanded, e.g. with an additional building for working on tram bogies.
In the role of specialist planner and designer, Inros Lackner is responsible for the structural design work, geotechnical engineering, surveying, pollution remediation planning, environmental planning and thermal building physics.
The construction work will be carried out in a number of construction phases while the existing tram depot is still in operation. The first phase includes the construction of the frame of the 400m-long parking structure for up to 60 trams. This also involves the prior raising of the ground level including any necessary retaining structures, and the construction of an underground sprinkler water tank with a volume of 966 m³. The second phase includes the step-by-step demolition and removal of existing structures and facilities, and the construction of a new workshop building of area 12,400 m², a collection place for recycling material, a depot control centre and various external works. The total construction costs are expected to come to approximately €110 million.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place in September 2021, and completion is planned for 2025.
