To minimise the effects of flooding in the Harburg district to the south of Hamburg, flood protection systems are constructed and flood zones developed which also serve to sustainably promote local agriculture. On behalf of the Wasserverband (“water association”) of the Ilmenau lowlands, Inros Lackner is responsible for the planning and design of the new Nettelberg floodwater control gate and pumping station, which are being built to replace structures from 1958 that do not comply with current technical requirements.
The entire floodwater control facility, including its twin gate elements and its concrete structures, needs to be replaced. With a clear width of approximately 4 m, it is also overdimensioned for the typical flow rate of about 1 to 1.5 m³/s, and it is not designed to be driven over as part of the planned dike defense path. Furthermore, the current facility’s technical equipment suffers from significant structural defects and deficiencies. Resulting from the preliminary planning process and evaluation of options, a preferred solution has been identified, which represents the basis for Inros Lackner’s planning and design work.
